Our client, a multinational company, is seeking an experienced and passionate Agronomist to join their team on their banana and grain farm. The ideal candidate will be responsible for overseeing soil health, crop management, pest control, irrigation, and sustainable farming practices to ensure high productivity and crop quality. The agronomist will work closely with farm management and staff to optimise farming practices, improve yields, and enhance overall farm sustainability.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assess soil fertility and structure, recommending appropriate fertilizers, organic matter, and soil amendments to improve crop productivity.
Design and oversee irrigation and water management systems, ensuring optimal moisture levels for crops.
Monitor crops for pests, diseases, and nutrient deficiencies, implementing integrated pest management (IPM) strategies to minimize losses.
Develop and implement sustainable farming practices, enhancing soil health, conserving water, and reducing environmental impact.
Oversee post-harvest handling and storage techniques, reducing losses and maintaining crop quality for market readiness.
Train farm workers on best agronomic practices, safety procedures, and efficient use of farming equipment, improving productivity and workplace safety.
Work closely with farm managers to create budgets, forecast production, and implement cost effective farming solutions, optimising financial and operational efficiency.
Stay updated on industry trends, new technologies, and government regulations related to agriculture, ensuring compliance and continuous farm improvement.
KEY QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
A bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Agricultural Science, or a related field. A master’s degree is preferable.
Minimum experience of 5 years in managing large-scale agricultural operations.
Expertise in cultivating tomatoes, onions, and cereals (soybeans and corn), covering the entire production cycle—from technical aspects (chemical applications, fertilizers, and land preparation operations) to manpower organisation.
Proficiency in both open-field cultivation and greenhouse farming is required.
Experience in managing tractors and land preparation equipment is preferable.
Knowledge of drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation systems is mandatory.
Critical thinking, problem-solving, and strong communication skills are essential.
